Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church)

Regardless of age, Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation. While typically celebrated with parents and their newborn infants, Baptism is also celebrated for adults through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). The Sacrament of Baptism is a wonderful opportunity for the Logan County Catholic Community to celebrate and welcome our newest members into the Body of Christ. We celebrate Baptisms as follows:

  • After Sunday Masses and after the Saturday Vigil Mass, scheduling permitting.
  • Baptisms are not celebrated at Mass or in the community setting during Lent.
  • Baptismal Preparation classes for parents seeking to have their first-born are required, for subsequent children these classes may not be needed to celebrate their Baptism.
  • We ask that you pre-register for these classes.
  • Please call the Parish Office at 217-732-4019 or call Sr. Margaret Scheiber at 217-732-2204 for more information and registration.

We are privileged to celebrate many Baptisms with our families. Baptismal classes can sometimes be full, seeking early registration of two months in advance of the date of celebration is suggested. Prior to scheduling the Baptism, all first-time parents are required to attend an instructional session. We encourage you to attend before the birth of your child, as both parents must attend. Childcare will not be provided during the conference. In this session, parents will learn about the Catholic Theology of Baptism, the Catholic Baptism Rite and ways to increase involvement in parish life. Parents can complete the Baptism Registration Form and email it to the parish office at abaker@logancountycatholic.org or by calling at 217-732-4019. Parents are expected to obtain a Godparent(s) Form and have the Godparent(s) complete the sponsor form prior to scheduling the Baptism. To download the Godparent(s) Sponsor Form, click here.

All parents that have previously attended a Baptism Class for their first child and are seeking Baptism for second or more child should first call the parish office to obtain instructions. Parents will be expected to obtain a Godparent(s) form and have the Godparent complete the Godparent(s) Sponsor Form prior to scheduling the Baptism.
